Product Description

The only high quality retsina available in the market today. Ritinitis is made from the Roditis grape variety that is harvested in the Aegialia region of the North-eastern Peloponnese. Once the grapes are destemmed and crushed, only the free-run must is kept for the Ritinitis production. Fermentation lasts approximately 30 days at 16C. During fermentation, a carefully calculated quantity of resin from the Pinus Halepensis pine tree is added to the must. After fermentation, the wine is clarified with bentonite. Tartrate precipitation is controlled by a cool stabilization of the wine at –4C and then bottled. Overall, Ritinitis is a well-made white wine with a hint of mint and eucalyptus on the nose. This wine pairs extremely well with salty foods and Indian cuisine.

Repositioning Retsina Wine (Appellation by Tradition) in a new quality context, Gaia Estate has meticulously selected grapes of Roditis variety which grow on the high slopes of Aegialia. Combining these low-yield grapes with state-of-the art wine – making technology, and a carefully calculated quantity during the fermentatiion process, approximately 0,3 gr/lit of untreated resin from the Pinus halepensis variety of pine tree, they succeed. The result is a refreshing wine balanced perfectly between pine and grapes –its citrus expression coexisting with its aromatic pine resin on equal terms.

Gaia Wines was founded in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos (Agricultarist) and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos (Agricultarist and PhD in Ecology from the University of Bordeaux II). Their company first emerged in the market with the introduction of Thalassitis, a dry Superior Quality Santorine White Wine that quickly rose to the top in the category of Greece's finest new wines.

Behind their labels lies a simple if provocative concept; that they wish to earnestly explore the limits of Greek varieties in the two areas they have chosen, Santorini and Nemea, and that with expertise, they may provide wine-loving individuals with an exquisite result.

The 9.800 bottle production figure of 1994 is quite significantly surpassed today by some 350.000 bottles, which they produce with the highiest degree of quality in mind, in honour of those who show their trust in Gaia Estate.

All their wines, finally, are characterized by the ecological structure of the yeast that takes the overpowering role.
